Ancient Empire’s Hidden Riches: Priceless Gold Coins Uncovered

Archaeologists made a surprising discovery in Bulgaria, uncovering five Byzantine gold coins dating back to the reign of Justinian the Great (527-565 A.D.) in the remains of a 10th-century house in the village of Debnevo. The coins, found in excellent condition, feature Justinian’s face and inscriptions, including “Our Lord Justinian Perpetual Augustus” and “Victory of the Augusts”.

The discovery, announced by Dr. Stiliyan Ivanov, associate professor at the National Institute of Archaeology and Museum, has sparked interest due to the coins’ unexpected location. Researchers believe medieval builders found the coins while constructing the 10th-century house, which later burned down, and the site was abandoned.

The coins, along with other artifacts like axes, sickles, ceramic vessels, and bronze rings, were discovered during a five-year excavation project. This find is one of several recent discoveries of ancient coins, including ancient Greek gold coins in Turkey and silver coins in the Czech Republic.

Ivanov expressed his delight at the interest in the coins, which provide a fascinating glimpse into the past. The discovery highlights the significance of archaeological excavations in uncovering hidden treasures and shedding light on historical mysteries.
