Amenfi Central MP Peter Kwakye-Ackah withdraws independent candidacy ahead of December elections

Peter Kwakye-Ackah, the Member of Parliament for Amenfi Central on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has withdrawn from contesting the upcoming December 7, 2024, parliamentary elections.

This announcement, reported by Class 91.3 FM on November 19, 2024, confirms that the incumbent MP will no longer run as an independent candidate after losing the NDC parliamentary primaries to Joana Gyan Cudjoe.

Initially, Kwakye-Ackah had filed to run independently following his defeat, but a post by Class FM stated he has now opted out of the race.

The decision follows the Electoral Commission of Ghana’s (EC) announcement that Joana Gyan Cudjoe will officially be on the ballot after the lifting of a High Court injunction that had previously disqualified her.

Dr. Eric Bossman Asare, Deputy Chair of the EC, explained on GHOne TV that Joana Gyan’s earlier disqualification stemmed from the court-ordered injunction but emphasized that the EC has now taken the necessary steps to reinstate her candidacy.

“The EC’s position has always been that her disqualification was due to the injunction. With the court now lifting the injunction, she is free to contest, and the road has been paved for her to be on the ballot,” Dr. Bossman said.

The legal wrangling began when an interlocutory injunction was secured by some dissatisfied individuals, temporarily barring Joana Gyan from contesting as the elected NDC candidate despite her victory in the May 13, 2023, primaries.

Following the annulment of the May election, fresh primaries were held on September 8, 2024, where Joana Gyan once again emerged victorious. Despite the EC’s initial disqualification based on the injunction tied to the annulled May election, the Sekondi High Court cleared the way for her to contest, solidifying her place on the ballot.
