Allied Health Professionals Council Sounds Alarm on Unemployment

The Allied Health Professions Council has raised concerns over the alarming rate of unemployment among licensed professionals, with over 20,000 graduates unable to find work. This crisis is further compounded by the mass exodus of experienced professionals seeking better opportunities abroad.

Council leaders attribute this trend to discriminatory recruitment practices by the government, which they claim prioritize certain health professionals over others. Acting Registrar Dr. Daniel Atta-Nyarko emphasized the need for equity and fairness in recruitment.

This year, 2,536 newly qualified allied health graduates were inducted and sworn into the profession. However, the Council fears these new professionals will add to the stagnant pool of unemployed allied health professionals in the country.

Call to Action

Dr. Atta-Nyarko urged the government to:

1. Prioritize recruitment of allied health professionals
2. Streamline training to ensure quality service delivery
3. Partner with the Council to address unemployment

At the induction ceremony, Dr. Atta-Nyarko reminded new graduates of their commitment to excellence and ethical practice. Consultant Medical Laboratory Scientist Dr. Thomas Gyampomah encouraged collaboration and leveraging technology for quality improvement.

“The healthcare landscape is constantly changing. Leveraging technological advances and embracing innovation, including artificial intelligence (AI), offers great opportunities for AHPs to play a critical role in leading healthcare transformation.” – Dr. Thomas Gyampomah

The Allied Health Professions Council is a statutory body established by an Act of Parliament to regulate training and practice of allied health professions in Ghana.
