After placing fourth in the December 7 general elections, Alan Kyerematen has been advised to retire from politics entirely. Despite being one of Ghana’s most prominent political figures over the past two decades, Kyerematen has struggled to convert his reputation into electoral success.
Political analysts believe his poor performance casts serious doubts on his political future. Kyerematen secured only 0.28% of the total votes cast, a lacklustre result that placed him fourth—not just behind the major contenders but also behind some minor candidates.
Once a stalwart of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kyerematen resigned from the party in 2023 after losing its presidential primaries, citing unfair treatment of himself and his supporters. Following his departure, he formed the Movement for Change and contested the December 7, 2024, general elections as an independent candidate.
Initially viewed as a potential major challenger to the flagbearers of the governing NPP and the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC)—Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and John Mahama, respectively—Kyerematen ultimately failed to meet expectations.
