At the 10th-anniversary dinner of the Oxford and Cambridge Society of Ghana (OXCAM), President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo challenged alumni to mentor the country’s youth, instilling critical thinking skills and inspiring innovative solutions to complex problems. This, he believes, will help Ghana become a leader in the global economy.
Addressing the gathering, President Akufo-Addo emphasized that building a prosperous and inclusive Ghana requires collective efforts, including intentional mentorship from alumni networks like OXCAM. He stressed that mentorship goes beyond offering advice, but involves igniting passion in young people to dream big, take risks, and strive for excellence.
As graduates of Oxford and Cambridge, President Akufo-Addo noted that they have been exposed to the best educational practices in the world, thinking critically, challenging assumptions, and seeking innovative solutions. He believes these skills are precisely what Ghana needs to cultivate in its young people.
The event, chaired by former President John Agyekum Kufuor, also an Oxford alumnus, reflected on the group’s achievements and aspirations. President Akufo-Addo purchased a contemporary artwork, “Market Day Hopes,” for GH¢100,000, and distinguished members, including the President, were honored with citations for their contributions to society.
President Akufo-Addo highlighted his government’s prioritization of education, implementing policies like the Free Senior High School program, which has benefited 5.7 million students. Former President Kufuor urged members to bring their experiences to bear on transforming humanity, emphasizing the importance of humanity in building the nation.
The Chairperson of OXCAM, Dr. Emefa Takyi-Amoako, commended founder members for their contributions and urged continued involvement to ensure the society remains vibrant and influential.
