Mr Daniel Dagba, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Akatsi South has cautioned the various driver unions within the Municipality, to adhere to the directives that emerged after engaging all parties in the transport business within the area.
He said this was necessary to ensure sanity and safety for all passengers and drivers, as well as mitigating the level of non-compliance by some drivers in their transport operations.
Mr Dagba gave the caution on Monday in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) after an engagement with the driver unions, where a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed by the various union leaders.
The engagement had led to the formation of one umbrella body to oversee transport operations within the area.
“The purpose of this MoU is to establish a unified body known as ‘Association of Akatsi South Transport Operators Union’ to promote coordination, representation, orderliness, and collaboration among all Driver Unions within the Municipality.”
Mr Dagba said the objectives of the MoU among others, were to promote unity and cooperation among all driver unions, to serve as a common platform for addressing issues affecting transport operators, and to foster orderliness, professionalism, and accountability.
The membership of the Union as contained in the MoU shall be open to all recognised driver’s unions operating within the Akatsi South Municipality, with each member union retaining its identity “but shall operate collectively under the umbrella of the new Union.”
On the governance structure of the Union, Mr Dagba explained that it shall be governed by an Executive Committee composed of representatives from each member union, whereas the leadership shall be rotational or as agreed upon by the member unions.
Mr Dagba stated that with clearly defined roles and responsibilities by the member unions, the Municipal Assembly shall serve as a facilitator and observer, providing institutional guidance and support where necessary.
The driver’s unions that signed the MoU include Gyeda, Vision, Cooperative, GPRTU, Protoa, Amot, Global Millennium, and Max Transport Union.
He said the development had become necessary due to the non-adherence to approved lorry fares by some drivers and the use of unauthorised loading points.
Mr Dagba also hinted that plans were advancing towards allocating loading points to the various unions at the main lorry station, where all drivers would be moved from the principal streets of Akatsi to ease the challenge of improper loading and parking of commercial vehicles.
Meanwhile, some drivers the GNA interacted with called for fairness and transparency on the part of the MCE over fears of being intimidated by some unions.
Their call was because some taxi drivers plying the Akatsi-Sogakope route who opted to join ‘Protoa’ small car union, were allegedly being frustrated by some sister unions.
Members of the Akatsi South Municipal Security Council have since witnessed the signing of the MoU.
