Agona West NPP expels Cynthia Morrison and 279 members for anti-party conduct

The Agona West Constituency branch of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has expelled 280 members, including the incumbent Member of Parliament (MP) Cynthia Morrison, citing allegations of anti-party behaviour. The decision followed numerous complaints from party members about their actions.

Cynthia Morrison, a former Minister for Gender, Children, and Social Protection, along with the expelled members, has been indefinitely barred from representing themselves as members of the NPP. This unanimous decision was reached during an Expanded Constituency Executive Committee meeting.

The expulsions were executed under Article 3(9)(1) of the NPP’s 2017 Constitution (as amended), which sanctions measures against members who fail to uphold the party’s principles and loyalty.

The party emphasized the importance of adhering to its constitution and values to maintain unity and integrity ahead of upcoming elections.

Cynthia Morrison was among four MPs whose seats were declared vacant in October 2024 by Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin for switching political affiliations to contest the 2024 parliamentary elections. The other MPs included Andrew Amoako Asiamah (Fomena), Kwadwo Asante (Suhum), and Peter Yaw Kwakye-Ackah (Amenfi Central).

However, the Supreme Court of Ghana later ruled the Speaker’s decision unconstitutional, clarifying that MPs could only lose their seats if they change political affiliation to contest elections within the same parliamentary term, not a future one.
