Afenyo-Markin announces NPP boycott over Speaker’s decision to vacate four parliamentary seats

The Member of Parliament for Efutu, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has announced that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) will boycott parliamentary sessions until the Supreme Court resolves the Speaker’s decision to declare four seats vacant.

Speaking to journalists shortly after Speaker Alban Bagbin made the announcement, Afenyo-Markin criticized the Speaker’s actions, stating, “We are boycotting Parliament until this matter is resolved at the Supreme Court.”

According to Afenyo-Markin, the Speaker overstepped his authority by interpreting the Constitution, alleging that the decision was biased and served the interests of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

“The Speaker has no right to interpret the Constitution. What he did was unconstitutional and aligned with the agenda of the NDC. We will pursue legal action and respect the Supreme Court’s ruling once it is made,” he explained.

The Efutu MP also accused Speaker Bagbin of working with the Minority to create instability in Parliament.

“The Speaker facilitated the serving of writs to advance the NDC’s agenda. As the majority in Parliament, we believe in the rule of law and are immediately boycotting Parliament in protest,” Afenyo-Markin declared.

The four MPs affected by the Speaker’s declaration are Peter Yaw Kwakye Ackah (NDC, Amenfi Central), Andrew Amoako Asiamah (Independent, Fomena), Kojo Asante (NPP, Suhum), and Cynthia Morrison (NPP, Agona West).
