Ablakwa vows legal action to compel government to compensate Akosombo Dam Spillage victims

The Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has announced plans to pursue legal action to ensure the government compensates all victims affected by the Akosombo Dam spillage.

In September 2023, the spillage from the dam displaced thousands of residents in the Lower Volta Basin, devastating farmlands and livelihoods.

Speaking at a victory walk organized by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in his constituency, Ablakwa reaffirmed his commitment to advocating for the victims, promising not to relent until they receive the compensation promised by the government.

“I have been assuring my constituents that we shall not forsake them or abandon them. We will not rest until every single victim of the [Volta River Authority] VRA’s spillage is fully compensated,” he declared.

He criticized the government for its perceived neglect of the affected communities, emphasizing that legal action will be taken to ensure accountability.

“We are initiating legal action to compel the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia government—a government that has abdicated and neglected the needs of the people—to wake up to their responsibilities. We will not rest until all my constituents are fully and duly compensated,” Ablakwa asserted.
