AAMUSTED fashion students design robust bee suit for apiculturists

Final-year Master of Philosophy (MPhil) students in Fashion Design and Textiles Education at the Akenten Appiah-Menka University of Skills Training and Entrepreneurial Development (AAMUSTED) have developed an innovative bee suit to address deficiencies identified in existing products on the market.

The AAMUSTED Bee Suit is made from lightweight, breathable fabrics and features a fully-netted hat that extends to the shoulders. It is reinforced with a boning mechanism that springs upward when worn, providing added comfort and protection.

On August 7, 2025, the Department of Fashion Design and Textiles Education (DFDTE) of the Faculty of Vocational Education (FVE), whose students created the suit, donated the first eight designs to the Faculty of Agriculture Education (FAE) to support apiculture (beekeeping) activities at the Department of Animal Sciences Education.

Presenting the suits, Dr. Josephine Aboagyewaa-Ntiri, Dean of the FVE, said the bee suit had been meticulously crafted to ensure enhanced protection, comfort, and durability for apiculturists.

She expressed optimism that the design would attract national attention and encourage investors to partner with the faculty for large-scale commercial production. She also commended the students for conceptualising and initiating the design as part of their academic work, urging them to further develop it into a viable business venture after school by leveraging the entrepreneurial training offered at AAMUSTED.

Dr. Ntiri described the donation to the FAE as a demonstration of inter-faculty collaboration, which she noted was crucial to advancing the University’s mandate.

Receiving the suits, Prof. (Mrs.) Margaret Esi Essilfie, Dean of the FAE, expressed appreciation for the gesture and assured that they would be put to judicious use to maximise their benefits for the University.

Prof. Stephen Larbi-Koranteng, Head of the Department of Crop and Soil Sciences, also expressed gratitude to the FVE and applauded the spirit of inter-faculty collaboration, stressing the need for all faculties to embrace such partnerships to drive AAMUSTED’s overall development.
