Mr Dominic Adomah Ameyaw, the Dormaa Central Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), has urged the people in the area to change their attitudes towards the environment to improve waste management and sanitation in the municipality. He advised them to participate in the monthly National Sanitation Day (NSD) exercise, which aimed at improving the sanitation situation of the area.
Mr Ameyaw said though it was unconventional for the Assembly to apprehend those who failed to participate in the NSD, everybody was mandated to join the exercise and to help keep the communities clean.
The MCE gave the advice in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) on the sidelines of a clean-up exercise to mark the NSD at Dormaa-Ahenkro.
Mr Ameyaw lauded the impressive turnout and called on the other political parties to participate in the clean-up exercises, saying the Assembly had intensified public awareness on the need for the people to observe good sanitation and proper hygiene.
He stressed the need for the people to change their minds and attitudes towards environmental sustainability and commended Osagyefo Oseadeyo Agyemang Badu II, the Paramount Chief of Dormaa Traditional Area for his commitment toward environmental cleanliness.
Mr Ameyaw said the Municipal Assembly had formed a sanitation task force, warning that sanitation offenders would be made to pay fines between GHC500 and GHC1000.
He expressed concern about the attitude of some people who stole some of the tools and equipment provided by the assembly for the clean-up exercises.
Earlier, the participants comprising Assembly Members, security agencies, associations and community-based organisations and some students swept streets, cleared choked gutters and picked plastic waste materials.
The Dormaaman Connect, a Community Based Organisation later presented 20 bags of sachet water to support the clean-up exercise.
