Sixty-three Members of Parliament (MPs) from Minority New Patriotic Party (NPP) Caucus have declared their unwavering support for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, a former Vice President for NPP flagbearer aspirant in 2028 elections.
They have ordered that their names and pictures must be published in the media to prevent any mischief or misleading report.
The NPP is slated to elect its Flagbearer on January 31, 2026.
Mr. Kwaku Ampratwum-Sarpong, Member of Parliament for Mampong and Coordinator of DMB, a group of MPS affirming support for Dr Bawumia, during a news briefing at Parliament House, in Accra. on Thursday, said two other MPs had also backed Dr Bawumia’s flagbearership but for strategic reasons would not want their names to be disclosed.
‘Dr Mahamudu Bawumia is our choice, the people’s choice, the Party’s strength and Ghana’s future. He carries Danquah’s courage, Busia’s intellect and Dombo’s humility and unifying heart,” Mr. Ampratwum-Sarpong declared.
The DMB Coordinator at Parliament was of the conviction that with Bawumia as the Party’s Flagbearer, the NPP would not only win but would lead Ghana into a new era of progress, opportunities and matinal pride.
“The torch has been lit, and the vision is clear. Let us move forward together, united in purpose, guided by faith and inspired by the future we believe in,” he emphasised.
Dr Bawumia, a former Vice President, is contesting the flagbearership slow with Mr. Kennedy Agyapong, former MP for Assin Central; Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, former Education Minister; Dr. Bryan Acheampong, the MP for Mpraeso; and Kwabena Agyapong, a former NPP General Secretary.
Dr Bawumia, the Party’s 2024 Flagbearer, has been touring the country, garnering support from party delegates and stakeholders, ahead of the Party’s delegates conference to elect its Flagbearer on January 31,2026.
The 63 MPs in Parliament who have backed Dr. Bawumia’s candidacy represent a substantial portion of the NPP’s 87 parliamentary members.
Their endorsement could influence the party’s decision-making process at its national delegates conference next year.
The NPP has faced internal conflicts and controversies, including allegations of corruption and factionalism. The party’s ability to present a united front and choose a popular flagbearer will be crucial for its success in the 2028 elections.
The NPP is one of Ghana’s two major political parties, known for its centre-right ideology.
The party has had significant influence in Ghanaian politics, with notable figures like Nana Akufo-Addo serving as Ghana’s President from 2017 to 2024.
