Dr Freda Akosua Oheneafrewo Prempeh, the former Member of Parliament for Tano North Constituency in the Ahafo Region has expressed worry that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is gradually losing the values upon which the party was founded.
She said: “The NPP I know since 1991 is losing its values through some disrespectful young ones because they don’t respect our party values and principles”.
Speaking in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Duayaw-Nkwanta, the Tano North constituency capital, Dr Prempeh, also a former minister of state, called on the party hierarchy to do more and sensitize the young ones about the ideologies and philosophies of the NPP.
She said: “I am really scared for my party in the current happenings. This is the great party some of us stood for during the turbulent times from 1992 to 2000 and it is unfortunate that some disrespectful ones are eroding the gains of our internal democracy”.
Dr Prempeh indicated that though “many of our distinguished party members are calling on me to contest for a national leadership position, however, the present happenings in our party are not the best”.
She was reluctant to comment on the upcoming Election 2028 Presidential Primary of the NPP stated January 31, 2026, however added that: “Many women in our party can’t declare their support because they feel Dr Bawumia’s team will sabotage them”.
Profile
Dr Prempeh was born on January 23, 1966. She is a Ghanaian politician, and MP in the Seventh Parliament and Eighth Parliament of the fourth republic of Ghana representing.
She was the Minister of State, for the Ministry of works and housing, and previously served as the Deputy Minister of Gender and Social Protection and the Assembly member from 2002 to 2010 for the Lakoo Electoral Area of the La-Dadekotopo Constituency in the Greater Accra Region.
In 2017, she was appointed chairperson of an 11-member local organising committee tasked to organise the 2018 African Women Cup of Nations.
Early life and education
She was born Accra to a Ghanaian Royal family and she is the third daughter of the late Ohenenana Akwasi Agyeman Dua-Prempeh, of the Ashanti Royal Family and the late Nana Amma Serwaa, (known if private life as Madam Georgina Ansah), the Kontrihemaa of the Duayaw Nkwanta Traditional Area in the Ahafo Region.
Dr Freda started her basic education at University Primary School, Kumasi and furthered with her Ordinary (O) level at Technology Secondary School (now KNUST Senior High School) in Kumasi and continued with her Advanced level Certificate (A level) at the Accra Workers College.
She then proceeded to the Ghana Institute of Journalism, where she pursued a Diploma in Public Relations and Advertising. She was honoured as a Certified Public Accountant by Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration in 1998.
Dr Prempeh holds both a Certificate and an Advanced Certificate in Marketing, DipM, MCIM, Chartered Marketer Professional Postgraduate Diploma in Marketing, all from the Chartered Institute of Marketing, United Kingdom.
She obtained her degree in (Business Administration), Human Resource Management Option from the University of Ghana in 2006 and further studied MA Comms, Media and Public Relations at the University of Leicester, UK.
Dr Prempeh has a PhD in Business Administration from the Ghana Technology University College.
Personal life
Dr Prempeh is a staunch Christian and is married with a son. She almost lost her life to the June 3, 2015, floods and fire disaster at circle, Accra.
Prior to her election into office as a MP in 2013, she was a manageress at the Point Four Hotel in Sunyani and had also worked with Prison Service for 10 years.
Political life
Dr Prempeh belongs to the NPP, and her political career started back in 2002, as an Assembly member for the Lakoo Electoral Area of the La-Dadekotopo Constituency in the Greater Accra Region, for eight years.
In February 2006, she was called to serve on the National Reconciliation Commission as a Public Affairs Officer for a period of nine months.
She served on the Mines and Energy, Government Assurance Committee in parliament and was subsequently appointed the Deputy Minister of Works and Housing and elevated to a substantive Minister for Sanitation and Water Resources for her integrity and hard work by the former President Akufo-Addo.
Dr Prempeh contested the Election 2020 as a parliamentary candidate for the Tano North seat on the ticket of NPP and won by more than 51 percent.
That makes it her third term as an MP to join the eighth parliament of the Fourth Republic.
However, in the parliamentary primaries of 2024 for the NPP, she lost in her attempt to represent her constituency for the fourth term.
