Fifty-eight per cent of Out-Patient Department (OPD) client in the Kpone-Katamanso municipality are insured under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), Dr. Esther Priscilla Biamah Danquah, Kpone-Katamanso Municipal Director of Health Services, has disclosed.
Dr. Danquah made the revelation during a sod-cutting ceremony at Kpone for the construction of an ultra-modern NHIS office to improve health insurance services in the district.
She expressed optimism that coverage levels would increase significantly by the end of the year, targeting at least 80 percent of OPD clients.
She explained that the NHIS remained a critical intervention in reducing the financial burden of health care on residents, especially those from low-income households.
“The scheme has made a huge difference in healthcare delivery within Kpone-Katamanso. However, we must work harder to ensure more of our people are enrolled so that no patient is left with the heavy cost of medical bills,” she stated.
According to her, the new NHIS facility, when completed, would provide a modern and convenient environment for clients to register, renew, and access health insurance services, noting that it would also help remove bottlenecks and delays that sometimes-discouraged residents from enrolling in the scheme.
Dr. Danquah emphasised that the health directorate, in collaboration with the NHIS and other stakeholders, would intensify public education campaigns in communities, schools, and workplaces to encourage wider patronage.
She appealed to residents who are yet to sign up for the NHIS to take advantage of the upcoming facility, stressing that health insurance was not only a safety net but also a key to achieving universal health coverage.
The new office is expected to be completed within eight months, and stakeholders are hopeful it will significantly enhance service delivery and accessibility.
The sod-cutting ceremony brought together health officials, municipal authorities, traditional leaders, and community members who expressed delight at the project, describing it as timely and necessary for improving healthcare financing in the area.
