Ghana’s LCIC honoured with top Climate Resilience Award in India

Legacy Crop Improvement Centre (LCIC) has won the “Climate Resilience Champion” award at the 2025 Seed Business Award in Hyderabad, India, recognising its role in climate smart agriculture across Africa.

The award was presented to the LCIC’s Founder and Chief Executive, Dr Amos Rutherford Azinu, by Dr Diallo Yacouba, Secretary General of the Africa Seed Trade Association (AFSTA), during the ceremony in Hyderabad.

“This recognition highlights LCIC’s outstanding commitment to developing climate-resilient agricultural solutions and reinforces our position as a leader in sustainable crop improvement across Africa,” Dr Azinu said in statement on Monday.

The statement, copied to the Ghana News Agency stated that the accolade acknowledged LCIC’s efforts over the years in developing climate-resilient agricultural solutions and its leadership in sustainable crop improvement.

The company, headquartered in Otareso in the Akuapem North Municipality of the Eastern Region, has been active in promoting food security and resilience in farming systems in Ghana and across the continent.

The trophy, featuring a crystal diamond top and golden accents, symbolises LCIC’s dedication to innovation in seed development and its alignment with global climate adaptation goals.

The Seed Business Award is one of India’s premier events for the seed industry, attracting stakeholders from across the globe to celebrate excellence in agricultural innovation, the statement said.

Established in 2015, LCIC develops and distributes high quality, climate smart seed varieties from a 200-acre irrigated farm and a 50 tonne cold storage gene bank, specialising in maize, soybean, cowpea and vegetable seed production.

The company’s works align with Ghana’s agricultural policy priorities to improve seed access, strengthen food security and promote sustainable farming systems.

The company also produces high yielding, drought tolerant varieties that help reduce reliance on imported staples and reinforce local food systems.

Over the years, Dr. Azinu has been an advocate for agricultural seed

sector reform and sustainable agriculture, urging government and industry to move from policy formulation to execution, the company said.

Through innovation, strategic partnerships, and farmer-focused solutions, the company continues to shape the future of seed security and agricultural sustainability across Africa.

The company’s participation in the India Africa Seed Summit and continued advocacy for effective policy implementation and accountability in Ghana’s seed sector is among its recent milestones.
