AngloGold Ashanti donates cadet uniforms, sports kits to Basic Schools

AngloGold Ashanti Iduapriem Mine has donated cadet uniforms to the Abompuniso Municipal Assembly (M/A) Basic School, and sports kits worth GH¢741,000 to eight other Basic Schools within its host communities.

The presentation, held at the Abompuniso (M/A) Basic School, formed part of the Mine’s Basic Education Improvement Programme.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mr. Stephen Adjei, Senior Manager-Sustainability, AngloGold Ashanti Iduapriem Mine, said as a mine, the company recognised that education extended beyond the classroom.

He said it included discipline, leadership, teamwork, and physical well-being, values that were strongly instilled through cadet training and sporting activities.

Mr. Adjei stated that by supporting these initiatives, they were not only helping to shape discipline, confident and responsible young leaders, but also nurturing talents, promoting unity, and encouraging healthy lifestyles.

“Providing the cadet uniforms will help instill a sense of identity, pride, and belonging for our young trainees. By supplying the sports kits, we are creating opportunities for pupils to showcase and develop their interest and skills in sports, while developing teamwork and perseverance skills,” he added.

The Sustainability Manager further emphasized that the Mine would continue to support efforts that enhanced quality education, skill development, economic empowerment, and social progress.

Mr. Adjei was hopeful that the donation would inspire their children to aim higher and become the leaders, athletes, and professionals their communities and nation needed.

He thanked the Municipal Education Directorate, authorities of the various schools, teachers and parents for their dedication and commitment to the future of their children.

Mr. Yaw Beyuo, Circuit Supervisor for Akyem Circuit, who received the items on behalf of the beneficiary schools said Iduapriem Mine was one of their major partners in advancing education development in the Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipality.

He said they have constructed ultramodern classroom blocks, teacher’s quarters, provided learning aids, awarded scholarships among others, adding, their contributions had really made a difference, and they would have struggled without them.

Mr. Beyuo expressed appreciation to the Mine and appealed to Non-Governmental Organizations and individuals to assist in improving education in the municipality.

Madam Joana Muddy, Headmistress of Abompuniso M/A Basic School, revealed that although the school had a cadet group, they could not participate in competitions due to lack of uniforms, stressing, “Now that we have uniforms, out kits can confidently display their talents with pride.”

She called on Iduapriem Mine and other institutions to help construct a state-of-the-art Information Communication Technology (ICT) laboratory for the school.
