Crime Check Foundation with support from Rabotec Ghana Limited has commissioned a 1,500 capacity poultry facility at the Nsawam Female Prison.
The Initiative forms part of The Director-General’s (DG’s) Kitchen Support Project for the Nsawam Female Prison to supplement inmates rationing.
Alhaji Ibrahim Oppong Kwarteng, Executive Director of CCF, speaking at the commissing said it was to provide the avenue for the inmates to acquire skills that would enable them become self reliant after their release.
He said the initiative was also to complement the government’s proposed poultry programme dubbed “Nkokɔ Nketenkete.”
It aimed at boosting poultry production in Ghana thereby reducing imports in the sector, creating jobs, improving feed production and expanding veterinary services.
He said the focus was to replicate the initiative in other prison facilities across the country.
“The Foundation with support from donors will construct 20 of such facilities across Ghana’s prisons to support the reformation and rehabilitation agenda of the Ghana Prisons Service,” he added.
He commended Mr Ibrahim Ali, CEO of Rabotec Ghana Limited, for supporting the initiative.
Director of Prisons, Ali Ababio, ln- Charge of Agriculture, speaking on behalf of the Director-General of Prisons, said the dream was conceived out of foresight and desire to contribute to national development.
He said it was to rebrand the Service while focusing on the core mandate to reform and rehabilitate inmates through agricultural practices.
He said the poultry was also geared towards supplementing inmates feeding and serve as a source of revenue to the service.
He said 10 Prisons establishment were being targeted to raise a minimum of 200,000 birds under the DG’s Kitchen Support Project.
He said the Director-General commended the CEOs of Rabotech Ghana Limited and Crime Check Foundation for sharing in the dream and supporting its realization.
The Director-General reaffirmed her dedication to ensuring that the project served its intended purpose.
Deputy Director of Prisons, Victoria Adzawuda In- Charge of Nsawam Female Prisons, said the Project, borne out of the vision of the DG of Prisons was aimed at contributing to sustainable agricultural practices within their prison facility.
She said the project would undeniably serve as a reliable source of poultry product to support inmate feeding, rehabilitation and training of inmates, while also generating revenue for the service and self-sufficiency.
She commedned the agric team of the Service for their dedication and commitment to the initiative.
“Once again, I welcome you all, and I encourage us to continue supporting initiatives that empower inmates and prepare them for successful reintegration into society upon discharge,” she added.
She said currently there was a 3,000 capacity catfish Farm operated by the Officers and inmates of the facility.
She said the inmates had been trained to take good care of the fingerlings until they grow.
