Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipal Assembly mobilizes local farmers for Feed Ghana programme

Mr Ebenezer Cobbinah, Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Tarkwa Nsuaem, says the Assembly has successfully registered 35 farmer cooperatives for the government’s flagship programme in agriculture- Feed Ghana.

They comprised, 946 farmers, made up of 573 males and 373 females.

Addressing assembly members, heads of department, and staff at the first ordinary meeting of the second session of the ninth assembly in Ahwietieso, Mr Cobbinah stated that the assembly had already distributed fertilizers to boost crop productivity and reduce the cost burden on farmers within the municipality.

Additionally, he said the assembly had also received 25,000 coconut seedlings which were currently being prepared for farmers across the municipality.

The coconut plantations would not only promote agro-economic diversification, but it would in the long term generate significant revenue for the farmers and the assembly, Mr Cobbinah explained.

According to the MCE, assembly members were recently being supplied with wellington boots and weedicides to be distributed to farmers in their respective electoral areas.

He indicated that to reduce post-harvest losses, improve value addition, and enhance the marketability of their agricultural products, the assembly was actively working towards securing a warehouse and processing facilities.

“Despite the progress we have made, the agricultural sector still faces hurdles like limited access to credit and markets, inadequate extension services, post-harvest losses and poor storage, Mr Cobbinah mentioned.

He assured the farmers that the assembly would prioritize regular farm visits and provide training for them on innovative agricultural practices.

Mr Cobbinah added that they would make farming attractive to the youth by backing agribusiness start-ups and collaborate with the private sector to establish demonstration farms.
