The maternal and child health team in collaboration with management of the Akatsi South Municipal Hospital, has organised a series of events aimed at marking breastfeeding awareness creation within the Municipality.
The health experts said breast milk remained the ideal food for infants, indicating that it was safe, clean, and contained antibodies that helped to protect against common childhood illnesses.
Ms Nancy Dado, a registered midwife at the Akatsi Municipal Hospital, who interacted with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) on the sidelines of their activities, disclosed that activities such as radio and TV education, float, workshop on breastfeeding such as pregnancy school with women among others were held.
āBreast milk is easily digestible, it protects your babies from infections, has the right amounts of nutrients your baby needs, and increases the mental development of your child. This awareness creation is marked in August every year,ā she said.
She further explained that breastmilk provided the needed energy and nutrients for the infant during the first months of life, āand it continued to provide up to half or more of a childās nutritional needs during the second half of the first year, and up to one third during the second year of life (WHO).ā
Ms Dado, a one-time Volta Regional Best Midwife, also appealed to women to adhere to the exclusive breastfeeding method regardless of their challenges.
