The Volta River Authority (VRA) has held a two-day Employee Volunteer Programme (EVP) at Anum Presbyterian Senior High School in the Asuogyaman District, engaging over 500 second-year students in career guidance and academic reinforcement.
The initiative, which is part of VRA’s community engagement strategy, also featured staff volunteers who facilitated sessions in Science, Technology, English, Mathematics, Government, History, Physics, Biology, and Elective Mathematics.
Addressing the session, Mr. John Chobbah, Principal Information and Publicity Officer at VRA, said the programme was designed as both a STEM bootcamp and a career guidance platform to help students make informed academic and professional choices.
“Our goal is not necessarily to recruit for VRA, but to inspire students to excel in their chosen fields and contribute meaningfully to national development,” he stated.
He emphasized that while VRA was widely known for its engineering operations, it employed professionals across diverse disciplines including law, medicine, ICT, public relations, human resources, and finance.
These professionals participated in classroom sessions to reinforce existing lessons and connect academic subjects to real-world careers.
Mr. Chobbah also urged students to remain focused and resilient, cautioning against distractions such as substance abuse and premature sexual activity.
“No matter the challenges, your choices determine your future. Stay determined and avoid distractions,” he advised.
Ms. Rhodha Enyonam Arthur, Principal of Community Relations at VRA, encouraged female students to pursue higher education and professional aspirations beyond early marriage.
“Young girls must know that they can become leaders, professionals, and mothers. With discipline and hard work, you can achieve anything,” she said, adding that balancing family life with career success is possible through education.
Students described the programme as motivational. William Osei Bonsu, a second-year student, said the sessions helped him understand time management and career planning.
“I now know how to structure my studies and choose a course that aligns with my dream of becoming a scientist,” he said.
The EVP forms part of VRA’s broader youth empowerment initiatives, aimed at promoting mentorship, education, and professional exposure in its operational communities.
