Fulani Herdsman Arrested for Attempted Murder of Farmer in Adaklu

A herdsman of Fulani extraction was on Sunday arrested after allegedly attempting to murder a farmer at Avedo, near Atikogbekope, in the Adaklu Torda Electoral Area of the Volta Region.

The suspect, identified only as Babuga, was overpowered by the victim, Mr. Seth Atamah, and subsequently handed over to the Adaklu Waya Police for investigation.

Mr. Belove Akpalu, Assemblyman for the Adaklu Torda Electoral Area, confirmed the incident to the Ghana News Agency. He said Mr. Atamah had brought the suspect to him before the police were involved.

Narrating the events, Mr. Akpalu said Mr. Atamah had gone to his farm on Sunday and discovered a herd of cattle destroying his crops while the herdsman stood by without intervening. When the farmer confronted Babuga, the herdsman reportedly drew a machete and attempted to attack him.

A struggle ensued, and Mr. Atamah managed to disarm and subdue the suspect before escorting him to Adaklu Torda.

The assemblyman handed over Babuga to the police at Adaklu Waya, where he remains in custody as investigations continue.

A source at the Adaklu Waya Police Station, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed the suspect’s detention and stated that the case is under further investigation.

This incident comes months after a similar case involving a Fulani herdsman. Earlier this year, a herdsman allegedly murdered Wonder Deku, an Okada rider and footballer from Adaklu Waya, after hiring him for transport to Atanve in the Akatsi North District.

Following that killing, angry youths from Adaklu Waya and surrounding communities vandalized the local market during the one-week observance of the deceased’s passing.
