Market women and traders at the newly constructed Berekum Thursday Market have appealed for improved security to fight stealing at the central market.
They expressed concern about the poor lighting system, lack of security personnel at the market which was constructed under the Ghana Secondary City Support Programme (GSCSP).
The GSCSP is a Government of Ghana programme funded by the World Bank with an Urban Development Grant (UDG) and Capacity Support Grant (CSG) component.

It was designed to improve the delivery of Urban Development Management and Services in the participating Municipal Assemblies.
During a visit to the market which served as an economic hub for traders and buyers in the municipality, the traders told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that stealing and burglaries were now common at the market.
Madam Comfort Tima, the Plantain Queen at the market, told the GNA that “lack of security personnel and bad lighting system are forcing some of the traders and market women to serve as security themselves”.
She called on the Berekum Municipal Assembly to tackle the problem with urgency and to control the crime wave at the market.
Efforts to contact authorities at the Assembly were unsuccessful.
