Today, Friday, July 11, 2025, over 6,000 eligible voters are anticipated to participate in a crucial parliamentary rerun across 19 polling stations in the Ablekuma North Constituency. This election aims to conclude months of political and legal disputes and to restore parliamentary representation in a constituency that has been in a state of uncertainty since December 2024.
The conflict began following the December 7 general elections when results from 62 polling stations became hotly contested between the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC), with both sides questioning the validity of pink sheets and the legitimacy of the collation process.
The Electoral Commission (EC) was able to collate results from 59 polling stations, leaving three stations unresolved and prompting legal challenges. In January 2025, the High Court instructed the EC to finalize the collation and announce the results.
However, the Commission announced unexpectedly that a rerun would take place, citing irregularities and missing endorsements in 19 polling stations, which escalated tensions.
The NPP objected to the EC’s decision, claiming that their candidate, Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie, had already achieved victory with a 414-vote advantage. The party sought a court injunction to prevent the rerun, but on July 9, the court dismissed the case, deeming it “unmeritorious.”
Despite the official boycott by the party, Akua Afriyie took a stand, stating her intention to participate in the rerun. “I am contesting. We are fully prepared. We are going for this contest,” she declared on July 10.
Her bold move garnered support from local NPP leaders, former and current Members of Parliament, and grassroots campaigners who gathered around her in the final moments before the election.
On the other side, the NDC, confident in their candidate Ewurabena Aubynn’s prospects, has intensified their campaign efforts.
The party maintains that Aubynn won the initial vote and has ramped up on-the-ground activities leading into the rerun.
“The people of Ablekuma North are prepared for change, and Ewurabena Aubynn symbolizes that change,” stated Greater Accra Regional Director of Elections Joshua Alabi during a final campaign appearance.
The Electoral Commission has promised voters and stakeholders that the rerun taking place today will be both transparent and credible.
Deputy EC Chair Dr. Bossman Asare informed reporters that the Commission is dedicated to concluding the prolonged electoral process and ensuring that Ablekuma North finally has representation in Parliament.
Increased security measures have been implemented at the 19 polling stations to maintain order and protect the electoral process.
More than just a parliamentary seat is at stake. A victory for the NDC would represent a significant achievement in a historically NPP stronghold. Conversely, a win for Akua Afriyie would validate her popularity and reveal fractures within the NPP’s national leadership.
As polling commences, both parties await results that could alter the political landscape heading into future national elections.
