The Kpone-Katamanso Municipal Assembly (KKMA) has commemorated the national “Tree for Life” tree planting exercise dubbed Green Ghana at the Haana KKMA Basic School.
The exercise is to be replicated within the entire municipality to ensure that enough trees are planted within the area.
Mr Albert Kofi Tsikata, the Head of Parks and Gardens, KKMA, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) during the planting exercise that the purpose of the exercise was to mitigate the impact of climate issues on the country and the world at large.
Mr Tsikata noted that the assembly, together with the various schools within the municipality, would plant various species of trees, both shade trees and fruit trees, in the schools and communities to serve as a windbreak to the buildings.
He said that the exercise would prevent windstormsfrom hitting the community, provide shade for people to sit under, beautify the community and save properties.

He also urged the schools and residents to protect the trees from being destroyed, adding that destroying them and the assembly will also provide the necessary equipment to protect them too.
Mr Samuel T.K. Morton, the Kpone-Katamanso Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), said that the communities need trees around them to sustain their lives and food.
Mr Morton stated that some communities in the municipality have issues whenever rainstorms occur, greatly affecting residents; therefore, the need for more trees could not be overemphasised, as it would protect roofs and structures from such effects.
He said even though the challenge of enough rainfall to nourish the trees was a concern, as well as the issue of stray animals, the assembly was determined to protect and care for the plants to serve its purpose.
He further mentioned that estate development has expanded and affected vegetation in the municipality and therefore entreated developers that after putting up the structures, they should plant trees within the estates to protect the area.
“Trees are for life, and when the last tree dies, the last man also dies, so it is important to plant more trees, as they are vital for living things, beautify the environment and provide food for the people,” he added.
The MCE reiterated the call on the students to protect the planted trees, as it would providee and prevent rainstorms from destroying their school buildings by serving as a windbreak.

Mr Samuel Tetteh Thompson, the head teacher of Haana KKMA Basic School, reaffirmed the importance of the exercise for the schools due to the fewer trees around the school area; it would provide a serene environment for effective learning and recreational activities.
He assured us that the school management, together with the students, would protect the plants from animals by fencing them in for the objectives of the exercise to be realised.
He appealed to the assembly through the assembly member to provide cages to protect the trees while urging residents with animals to prevent them from wandering into the school premises to eat the plants.
