Schools and Colleges in the Southern Zone of the Volta Region have commenced their inter-school sports and festivals, which is currently being co-hosted by the Keta Senior High Technical School (Ketasco) and Keta Business College (KetaBusco).
The event, which commenced on Monday, June 23, is expected to feature and unearth various student athletes from about ten second circle institutions, and will end on Saturday, June 28.
Mr Daniel Kovor, the Physical Education Head and Instructor at Ketabusco, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency, said the event marked the 60th annual inter-school sports festival which was expected to be highly contested in a full spirit.
“Every school is well prepared for this competition and l know this year’s event would help us to identify and unearth new talents for the main zonal competition,” he said.
He explained that athletes from the schools were expected to participate in events including athletics, soccer, basketball, handball, volleyball, Table Tennis, shot put, high jump, discus throw, javelin, cross country race, among others.
Mr Stephen Akahoho, the Keta Municipal Physical Education (PE) Coordinator, also revealed that schools such as Zion College (Zico) Anseco, Afiasec, Voltasco, Anyasco, Ketasco, Aborsco, Atiasec and KetaBusco were institutions represented in the competition.
However, the Tsiame Senior High School (Tsiamesco) could not make it due to some internal challenges.
He said the competitions started on Monday June 13 with field track events, with qualifications in events such as 1000 metres (M) Medley relay, 200m, 4×100m relay, 100m, 400m, 4×200m with long jump boys finals, Discus finals, triple jump girls finals and shot-put boys’ finals.
He said the track events would continue Tuesday, June 24, while games such as football, basketball among others would follow until Saturday, June 28 when the cross-country race would be held at dawn.
Mr Akahoho believed that with the kind of training and talents the various athletes exhibited in the various disciplines so far, old record sets would be broken while new ones would be set during this year’s competition.
He thanked various headmaster, PE teachers and instructors, stakeholders among others for the roles played for the successful organisation and appealed to students, old students and the public to comport themselves throughout the competition period for successful event.
Some PE teachers and athletes the GNA engaged expressed, expressed the hope that they would emerge winners of the competition and represent the southern zone in the upcoming zonal competitions.
The GNA also observed the presence of the Ghana Ambulance Service, the police and other security personnel, to enhance and protect the integrity of the competition as well as smooth organisation of the games.
It was also gathered that the main zonal competition, which would feature other zones from the region, would be also held in either Keta or Anloga in August this year.
