The Parliamentary Service of Ghana has started preparations for the transition to the 9th Parliament of the 4th Republic by announcing the registration process for Members-elect.
In a statement released on Monday, December 23, 2024, by Camilo Pwamang, Deputy Coordinator of the Dissolution/Inauguration Committee and Deputy Clerk to Parliament, the registration exercise will commence online on Wednesday, December 25, 2024, and transition to physical registration on January 2, 2025.
Members-elect are required to complete the online registration first, with physical registration scheduled to take place at Parliament House in Accra from Thursday, January 2, to Monday, January 6, 2025. This process forms part of the broader preparations for the dissolution of the 8th Parliament and the inauguration of the 9th Parliament.
Below are the series of events leading up to the inauguration of the 9th Parliament:
- Election of the Speaker: Scheduled for January 6, 2025, at 11:00 p.m., with Members-elect expected to be seated by 9:00 p.m.
- Swearing-in of the Speaker-elect and Members-elect: Immediately after the election at midnight.
- Swearing-in of the President-elect and Vice President-elect: To take place on January 7, 2025, at Independence Square, Accra. Members of Parliament will be transported to the venue and are required to be seated by 9:00 a.m., with the ceremony starting at 10:00 a.m.
The Parliamentary Service emphasized the importance of adhering to registration timelines and punctual attendance at all events to ensure a seamless transition.
