The Vice President of Ghana, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, inaugurated Ghana’s first fleet of electric buses on Wednesday, November 27, marking a step towards the modernization of the country’s public transport system.
The buses will be tested starting this week. The initiative stems from Dr Bawumia’s vision to adopt electric vehicles as a cost saving measure for the transport sector.
During the inauguration on Wednesday (November 27), Metro Mass Transit Limited (MTTL) managing director Albert Adu Boahen said measures have been taken to ensure the efficient use of electric buses.
The buses will be deployed on routes such as Oyibi-Accra, Accra-Amasaman and Ashaiman-Accra. This initiative is expected to reduce the cost of public transport by 40%.
Adu Boahen said that ancillary equipment such as charging stations should be installed at all MTTD stations in the capital.
“This represents a significant saving of 40% in operating costs, which allows us to reinvest in expanding and improving our services. Part of this cost reduction will also be passed on to the public through cheaper fares and reliable service.
“In addition, electric buses offer a smoother and quieter ride, improving the overall passenger experience. The Board of Directors and management are aware of the paradigm shift in passenger preferences in the evolving segmented market of the road transport sector.
“We know that our mandate as a company is to ensure that the necessary system, operational structures and resources are in place to effectively manage these buses,” he said.
