The Presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has revealed a plan to introduce free tertiary education for children of cocoa farmers if elected.
This project intent to replace the Senior High School (SHS) Cocoa scholarship Scheme which has become redundant due to the free SHS program currently in place.
Addressing cocoa farmers during the celebration of Farmers’ Day in Jocubu, Odotobri Circongress, Dr. Bawumia stressed that the policy aims to directly support cocoa farmers by ensuring access to higher education for their children without financial barriers.
“Initially, COCOBOD offered scholarships to the children of cocoa farmers so that they could attend secondary schools. However, with the introduction of the Free Secondary School (SHS) policy, every child can attend and secondary schools free of charge.
“The government therefore plans to reallocate funds that were previously used to cover school fees for children of cocoa farmers. Starting next year, COCOBOD will resume paying school fees for cocoa farmers “, he said.
