Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the running mate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2024 elections, has called on Ghanaian Muslims to refrain from voting for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the upcoming December 7 polls, claiming the party has shown disregard for the Muslim community. Speaking at a rally in Damongo in the Savannah Region on November 7, 2024, Dr. Opoku Prempeh referenced the demolition of two major mosques in Accra and Koforidua as evidence, alleging the NDC has historically marginalized Muslims.
“Dr. Bawumia himself has rehabilitated 21 mosques,” he noted, contrasting the NPP’s actions with what he described as the NDC’s tendency to “only use Muslims for voting.” He pointed out that when NDC leaders took office, they chose not to occupy the Jubilee House due to its proximity to Nima, an area with a significant Muslim population.
“If you are a Muslim and you use your thumb to vote for the NDC instead of Samuel Abu Jinapor and Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, you are making a mistake—it is haram,” Dr. Opoku Prempeh emphasized, encouraging Muslims to consider the NPP as a party that respects and supports their community.
