Ghana’s Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, postponed the Assembly indefinitely due to the lack of issues to be discussed by the legislators, after the failure of the Business Committee to meet and prepare the necessary agenda for the assembly.
The majority group, who initiated the recall session to address various issues did not appear in the House. Speaker Bagbin expressed disappointment, noting that his absence stopped the process.
Bagbin in his speech, emphasized that without the input of the committee and an agenda, the session could not proceed as planned.
“The issues that they wanted us to address, which I admitted have been reviewed by the business committee, are not on the agenda and in fact there is no agenda for today because the Business Committee has not been unable to meet due to the absence of the people who requested the revocation.
“As you can see, one side of the room is completely empty. With this in mind, we have a quorum to sit, but there is no business to transact. In the absence of this, no other authority can bring you business that you have not decided to treat.
“Since the Business Committee has not met, due to the refusal of those who requested the withdrawal, we are forced to postpone the session of the House. Knowing the challenges we face, it is not advisable to postpone the session from day to day. “Therefore, once again, I will postpone the session for an indefinite period,” he said.
This latest postponement comes amid ongoing tensions between the majority and minority parliamentary groups over which party has the majority in the House, which has affected parliamentary proceedings in recent weeks.
With the indefinite suspension, it is unclear when Parliament will meet to address the outstanding issues, leaving the legislative agenda for this session in uncertainty.
