Ghana striker Antoine Semenyo scored to give AFC Bournemouth a memorable victory over Manchester City in the English Premier League on Saturday afternoon.
Goals from Semenyo and Brazilian Evanlison gave AFC Bournemouth their first win against Manchester City at the Vitality Stadium.
The Cherries, in good form after taking four points from their last two games against Aston Villa and Arsenal, started quickly and positively.
Ederson was forced to make a double save after just two minutes as he stopped Semenyo and Justin Kluivert.
With the tone set, Bournemouth continued to press high and were rewarded in the ninth minute when Milos Kerkez’s cross from the penalty area was deflected by Semenyo. City failed to score a single attempt on goal during a very disappointing first half.
Bournemouth went into the second half full of confidence and came close to doubling their lead in the first minute, but Ederson suddenly came off his line to clear Evanlison’s effort.
Evanlison secured his next chance, however, sliding to meet Kerkez’s low ball and slotting it into the bottom corner.
The hosts should have scored three moments later but Adam Smith, who had an open goal, fired over the bar after Marcus Tavernier’s shot hit the post.
City finally registered an effort on goal in the 80th minute, albeit a timid one, with Erling Haaland struggling to put any power into the volley. And two minutes later, Josko Guardiol went over to deceive a despondent Mark Travers and give the Premier League champions hope, but they couldn’t equalise.
Defeat means City drop to second after Liverpool came from behind to beat Brighton, while Bournemouth drop to eighth.
Semenyo has now scored four goals and provided an assist in 10 Premier League games for AFC Bournemouth this season so far.
