Patrice Motsepe is a South African billionaire and mining magnate, and has led the CAF since being elected unopposed in 2021, backed by FIFA president Gianni Infantino as his preferred candidate.
“Honoring requests from several CAF member association presidents, zonal union presidents and key players, CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe has agreed to stand for election in the upcoming CAF presidential election.
Currently, no other candidate has declared his intention to run for the presidency of the CAF, although the application deadline remains four months before the date of the election.
Dr. Motsepe’s participation in African football dates back to 2003, when he acquired a stake in the South African club Mamelodi Sundowns, then invested heavily to make the team African champions in 2016. He is the first black African billionaire to appear on Forbes and his net worth is estimated at $3 billion.
Patrice Motsepe was recommended by Gianni Infantino to reform African football after former CAF president Ahmad Ahmad was suspended over corruption allegations. If re-elected, Motsepe will remain the seventh president of CAF since its foundation in 1956.
