Labour Commission Orders Public Services Workers Union to Call Off Strike

The Public Services Workers Union (PSWU) has been instructed by The National Labour Commission (NLC) to immediately end its strike.

The NLC also mandated both parties to restart discussions regarding the two institution-specific allowances by October 31, 2024, and to report the results of their meeting to the commission by November 6, 2024.

The National Labour Commission also urged the parties to negotiate cordially in order to resolve the situation.

The NLC’s involvement seeks to help resolve the issues between the union and the FWSC, promoting a cooperative industrial relations atmosphere.

In response to the NLC’s directives, Prof. Charles Adabo Oppong, the Director of Grievances and Negotiations at FWSC, stated, “We appreciate the NLC’s directive and are eager to continue our discussions with the Public Services Workers Union.” He emphasized that the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) is dedicated to addressing the unresolved issues and achieving solutions that benefit both parties.

The NLC plays a vital role in settling labor disputes, as outlined in the Labour Act of 2003 (Act 651). By directing the halt of the strike, the NLC has opened the door for productive discussions and negotiations.

On October 15, 2024, the PSWU declared its plan to begin an indefinite strike on October 21, 2024. This decision was made because of the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission, delay in concluding negotiations concerning two specific allowances owed to its members.
