Tensions are running high in Ghana as the National Democratic Congress (NDC) alleges that the government plans to deploy soldiers to Parliament on Tuesday, October 22, 2024. This comes after the Speaker of Parliament declared four parliamentary seats vacant, a decision temporarily stayed by the Supreme Court, fueling political tensions between the NPP and NDC.
NDC Chief Whip Kwame Governs Agbodza warns against military presence, citing previous incidents where MPs were assaulted. “We are aware of the government’s plan to deploy the military to Parliament,” he said, cautioning that the public would react forcefully to anyone in uniform.
Agbodza accuses the government of deploying the military at the start of the 8th Parliament in 2021, resulting in MP assaults. He emphasizes that the government’s term is ending soon, and they will be held accountable for their actions.
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) denies knowledge of military deployment plans. First Deputy Majority Whip Habib Iddrisu stated on Joy FM’s Middaynews that no military presence is needed in Parliament, and their leadership hasn’t been informed of any such plans.
