Public Services Workers Union (PSWU) members are set to go on an indefinite strike today, October 21, 2024, due to the government’s failure to pay institution-specific allowances. The union has been pushing for these allowances to reflect the unique challenges faced by its members in specific institutions, but the government has refused to honor them, adding to the financial strain on public service workers.
Reasons for the Strike
– Non-payment of institution-specific allowances despite several attempts to resolve the issue
– Delayed implementation of recommendations made by a nine-member committee to review the Single Spine Pay Policy (SSPP)
– Failure to address compensation challenges within the public sector
The Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) has urged the PSWU to reconsider the strike, stating that it would disrupt ongoing negotiations and hinder progress. The FWSC claims it cannot be blamed for delays in negotiations, as it must follow necessary processes to secure a mandate and conclude discussions.
FWSC’s Position
– The strike is against the rules of engagement signed and the Labour Act, Act 651
– Negotiations cannot continue while the union is on strike
– FWSC submitted cost implication scenarios for the requested allowances to the Ministry of Finance on September 28, 2024
The strike is expected to affect public services, including civic education and public awareness campaigns across the country. The FWSC has assured its commitment to continuing negotiations and finding a resolution to the dispute.
