Hairstylist jailed five years for GH¢139,000 recruitment scam; accomplices still at large

The Accra Circuit Court has sentenced Adwoa Nyarko, a hairstylist, to five years in prison for her involvement in a GH¢139,000 recruitment scam.

Nyarko was found guilty on four counts, including conspiracy to commit a crime and defrauding by false pretenses. Her accomplices, Nana Osei and Charles Kwame Damoah, remain at large.

Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Raymond Ackon, who prosecuted the case, told the court—presided over by Mrs. Ellen Ofei Ayeh—that Nyarko resides in Wenchi.

The scam came to light in September 2021, when two complainants, Nana Yaw Barimah and Collins Atta Oteng, reported to the police that Nyarko and her accomplices had promised jobs for their relatives at the Ghana Revenue Authority. The victims had paid GH¢39,000 in 2020, but no jobs were secured.

After receiving the complaints, the police launched an investigation, which led to Nyarko’s arrest in Asankare, Ashanti Region.

During interrogation, Nyarko confessed to taking money from the complainants to secure jobs for residents of Asante-Akyem. However, she claimed to have handed the money over to Osei and Damoah.

Efforts are ongoing to locate and apprehend the accomplices to assist with further investigations.
