Ghanaian musician Belinda Ekua Amoah, popularly known as Mzbel, has commended President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for the successful implementation of the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy, which she says has eased the financial burden on parents and guardians.
In a candid revelation, Mzbel admitted she was initially skeptical about the policy. However, her perception changed after she accompanied a student to Achimota Senior High School following their admission.
The songstress shared her surprise at discovering that most of the school expenses, including tuition, uniforms, and books, had been fully covered by the government.
“I had been hearing about Free SHS on the radio, but I never believed it—until recently. I withdrew money to cover various expenses, but when I asked the teachers, they told me the government had paid for everything, including books, uniforms, and admission fees,” she said in a video shared on X (formerly Twitter).
Mzbel noted that she only had to buy a mattress and provisions for the student, which she considered a fair deal.
“So, Nana, you have honored your promise. I am grateful to you,” she added, expressing her appreciation for the policy’s impact.
The Free SHS initiative, introduced by President Akufo-Addo in 2017, has been widely applauded for making education accessible to students from less privileged backgrounds.
Despite its success, some politicians and educationists have called for a review of the policy to address challenges such as overcrowding and infrastructural deficits in schools.
Mzbel’s endorsement adds to the public support for the initiative, showcasing how it has touched the lives of many across the country.
