Mamobi NDC members issue stern warning to NPP supporters following Sunday’s clash

Supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) clashed in Mamobi, Accra, on Sunday, October 13, 2024, resulting in injuries and heightened tensions just two months before the general elections.

In a viral video, an NDC member, flanked by a group of heavily-built men, issued a stern warning to NPP supporters. He singled out an individual named Alhaji Aziz, accusing him of repeated attacks on NDC members with no police intervention.

The NDC supporter expressed outrage over the alleged stabbing of an 11-year-old boy, who he said was attacked simply for wearing an NDC-branded T-shirt.

“We are putting brotherhood aside because this is becoming too much. You stabbed an 11-year-old boy over a T-shirt, and we will not sit by for this to happen again. Be prepared for anything,” the man cautioned in Hausa, warning that they were ready to retaliate if provoked further.

Details of the Clash

Reports indicate that the incident involved supporters from the Zongo communities of Nima, Mamobi, and Newtown in Accra. The confrontation escalated into physical fights, with both groups exchanging punches.

Gunfire erupted during the altercation, sending people running for cover. In one video, an NDC supporter who was allegedly shot in the leg was seen lying on the ground, while others rushed him to the hospital. Another individual appeared to have sustained a gunshot wound to the back.

Police Action

The Ghana Police Service has since launched an investigation into the violence. A suspect identified as “Fatau Motorway” was seen holding a weapon in video footage, and the police have declared him wanted.

“We urge the public to provide any credible information to assist in apprehending Fatau and other perpetrators,” the police said in a statement.

So far, one person has been arrested and is assisting with investigations. Nine people were injured during the clashes; seven have been treated and discharged, while two remain hospitalized.

This incident adds to rising political tensions as the nation gears up for the December 2024 elections.
