Kasoa residents clash with Chinese contractors after fatal rock blast incident

Some residents of Kasoa narrowly avoided lynching Chinese contractors following a rock blast on the Buduburam section of the Accra-Winneba Highway on Monday, October 14, 2024. The blast reportedly claimed at least four lives.

Residents accused the contractors of failing to give prior notice, a common practice in the past, which would have allowed them to evacuate. Typically, the contractors notify the community by sending vans to alert them before blasting rocks, but no warning was issued this time.

In a viral video, residents are seen manhandling two Chinese contractors, attempting to escort them to the local chief. Some residents, armed with various weapons, sought to attack the contractors but were restrained by others urging calm.

One contractor, however, suffered a severe blow to the head from a resident wielding a large piece of wood, knocking him to the ground despite wearing a helmet.

The incident has sparked outrage and heightened tensions in the community, raising concerns over communication lapses and public safety measures.
