The Ghana Highway Authority (GHA) has temporarily closed the Prang-Atebubu stretch of the Atebubu-Kumasi Highway in the Bono East Region due to flooding caused by the overflowing White Volta River. The Nyomoase Bridge, a critical section of the highway, has been submerged, cutting off several communities and disrupting economic activities.
Fortunately, no casualties have been reported. However, the flood has severely impacted the movement of residents, traders, and motorists.
Emmanuel Okanklu, Bono East Regional Director of GHA, confirmed the closure and outlined the authority’s proactive measures:
1. Diverting traffic to facilitate vehicular movement.
2. Constructing a cofferdam to contain the water and create space for commuters.
3. Standing by to repair the road once water levels recede.
Bono East Regional Minister, Kwasi Adu-Gyan, visited the scene, reassuring affected communities that the situation would be addressed promptly. He emphasized the government’s commitment to maintaining the valuable Atebubu-Kumasi highway.
To ensure safety, security operatives will be deployed along the highway. Drivers are advised to exercise caution.
