Ghana’s Chief Justice, Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, has made a passionate plea for urgent action against the destructive practices of galamsey (illegal mining) and sand winning, which are ravaging the country’s environment. Speaking at the 2024 Eve International Foundation Women’s Conference, Justice Torkornoo emphasized the need for collective action to halt these unlawful activities.
The Chief Justice urged influential women leaders and citizens to demand an end to the impunity surrounding land and environmental management practices. She lamented the disorderly and lawless manner in which these activities are being conducted, stressing that Ghana’s history of overcoming adversity is being threatened by these new challenges.
Justice Torkornoo drew parallels between Ghana’s past struggles, including slavery and colonialism, and the current environmental degradation. She recalled the notorious practice of kalabuley, highlighting the country’s ongoing battle with injustice and social upheaval.
As an advocate for sustainable development and the rule of law, the Chief Justice emphasized the critical importance of land and environmental management in securing a future where women can thrive economically, socially, and healthily. She called on women leaders to join her in demanding an end to indiscriminate impunity and unlawful land disposition.
Justice Torkornoo also highlighted the significance of mentoring the younger generation to foster respect for the rule of law and legality. “If we close our ranks and support each other, we can build a society that is a just society for women,” she said.
The conference, themed “Gender Equality: Transforming Women’s Leadership for National Development and Beyond,” celebrated the passage of the landmark Gender Equity Act 2024. Sheila Minka-Premo, Board Chair of the Eve International Foundation, praised the Affirmative Action Bill Coalition’s relentless advocacy, describing the Act’s passage as a “great win” in Ghana’s pursuit of gender equality.
Minka-Premo urged all stakeholders to actively advocate for and support the implementation of the Act, stressing its key role in achieving meaningful progress in the gender equality movement.
The Attorney General has also charged the Chief Justice to direct judges to conclude galamsey cases. This development underscores the government’s commitment to addressing environmental degradation and promoting sustainable development.
