Tropicana Field, the home stadium of the Tampa Bay Rays baseball team, was intended to serve as a safe haven for thousands of storm personnel and first responders battling the devastating effects of Hurricane Milton. However, the storm’s ferocious winds had other plans.
Making landfall as a Category 3 hurricane on Wednesday, Milton brought widespread destruction and chaos to Florida, shredding the roof of Tropicana Field and rendering it unusable. The stadium, which was designated as a 10,000-person base camp for debris cleanup operations and first responders, was left exposed and vulnerable.
Aerial footage captured the extent of the damage, showing rows of empty cots surrounding the baseball diamond, once intended to provide respite for weary storm personnel. The destruction was a stark reminder of Milton’s unrelenting fury.
“This is one of the most surreal things I’ve ever seen,” said storm chaser Jonathan Petramala, who arrived at the stadium in downtown St. Petersburg. “I was able to get my hands on a piece of the roof, and it feels like thick vinyl. But it was no match for Milton’s winds.”
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis had earlier announced that Tropicana Field would serve as a staging area for emergency operations. However, as Milton’s strength intensified, the responders were swiftly relocated to ensure their safety.
“Tropicana Field is a routine staging area for these types of operations,” DeSantis explained on Thursday. “But we moved the responders before the storm. There were no state assets in the stadium when the roof was destroyed.”
Fortunately, no injuries were reported at the stadium. However, the death toll from the hurricane stands at at least four, with officials warning that the number is likely to rise.
