The Ghana Highway Authority (GHA) has announced a temporary closure and diversion of the Atomic Junction overpass in Accra from October 3 to 22, 2024, to repair the exposed expansion joints on the bridge. The closure will take place daily from 8 pm to 6 am during this period.
The Atomic Junction Flyover, which connects Adenta, Madina, and Legon along the N4 highway, has suffered wear and tear, with the coverings of its expansion joints coming off. This has caused discomfort for motorists due to the unsettling noises made by vehicle tyres passing over the exposed joints.
Expansion joints are critical to maintaining the structural integrity of bridges by allowing the concrete to expand and contract without cracking. They also ensure a smooth ride for drivers while reducing the need for costly repairs.
Despite previous efforts to fill some of the joints with bitumen, a number of them remain exposed, prompting the GHA to initiate this repair process. Motorists are advised to take note of the closure and follow the planned diversions.
