Akua Donkor, the presidential candidate of the Ghana Freedom Party, has come to the defense of Jean Mensa, the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), stating that she doesn’t hate anyone. In an interview with Accra-based Kasapa FM, Madam Donkor emphasized that Mrs. Mensa’s actions are guided by her commitment to upholding electoral laws, not personal interests.
“Jean Mensa doesn’t hate anyone, but you have to do what is required of you to avoid any issues with her,” Madam Donkor said, likening the EC to “Ghana’s God” due to its crucial role in determining who qualifies to contest elections. She urged all political parties to comply with the electoral process requirements and rules.
Madam Donkor’s comments come after the EC disqualified 11 presidential candidates ahead of the 2024 election due to non-compliance with legal requirements. Despite the EC’s assurance to refund filing fees, some candidates have initiated legal action against the Commission.
Madam Donkor’s strong support for Jean Mensa was evident when she said, “God gave us Jean Mensa, so if the Electoral Commission asks me to do something, that is exactly what I will do. Whoever speaks ill of Jean Mensa will not be forgiven by God”.
