NDC Flagbearer Vows to Hold Govt Accountable for Dubious Gas Deals

John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress, has sounded a warning to the current government to refrain from signing any new gas contracts. Mahama’s concern stems from the government’s lack of investment in additional gas over the past eight years, despite the Minority in Parliament raising alarms about suspicious contracts signed by the Ghana Gas Company that have led to the resurgence of load shedding, or “dumsor”.

Mahama is particularly skeptical about the government’s sudden rush to sign an $800 million contract with the Phoenix Park Gas Processors Consortium, allegedly under pressure from the Presidency and without parliamentary approval. He believes the government’s motivation is to secure a 10% share, regardless of the potential consequences or delays.

Mahama emphasized that contracts of such magnitude require parliamentary approval, which has not been obtained in this case. He vowed to hold the government accountable for any financial losses incurred as a result of these questionable dealings.

It’s worth noting that Ghana has previously entered into significant agreements for gas projects, including an $850 million agreement with China. However, Mahama’s concerns highlight the need for transparency and accountability in such dealings to ensure the best interests of the nation are served.
