The University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) is set to be renamed after its founder, Nana Opoku Ampomah, thanks to an assurance from Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh, the Vice Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party. This promise was made during a courtesy call on the chief of Amoafo, Nana Opoku Ampomah, as part of Dr. Prempeh’s tour of the Bekwai constituency in the Ashanti Region.
Nana Opoku Ampomah, who also serves as the Paramount Chief of the Amoafo-Bekwai Traditional Area, recently celebrated his 95th birthday on August 28, 2023. However, the renaming of the university, which was initially promised by President Nana Akufo-Addo on April 25, 2018, remains pending.
According to Dr. Prempeh, the necessary constitutional and legal processes are underway to effect the name change to “Opoku-Ampomah University of Professional Studies.” This development is expected to bring significant benefits to the Amansie East district, including improvements in infrastructure, power stability, healthcare, job creation, and business growth.
The Krontihene of Amoafa in the Bekwai Constituency has urged the government to expedite the renaming process. Meanwhile, Dr. Prempeh has encouraged the community to support Dr. Bawumia and Parliamentary Candidate Ralph Poku-Adusei in the upcoming elections to ensure a bright future for Ghana.
