Ghana’s fishermen are about to get a game-changing upgrade – solar-powered outboard motors! Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flag bearer of the New Patriotic Party, announced this innovative solution to tackle the long-standing issues with pre-mix fuel. Starting next month, fishermen will be introduced to these eco-friendly motors, which will not only reduce their dependence on pre-mix fuel but also provide a cleaner and more sustainable alternative.
Benefits of Solar-Powered Outboard Motors
– Renewable Energy Source: Harnessing solar power to charge batteries, reducing reliance on fossil fuels.
– Cost-Effective: Eliminating the need to buy pre-mix fuel, saving fishermen money in the long run.
– Environmental Benefits: Minimizing pollution and protecting Ghana’s marine ecosystem.
Dr. Bawumia emphasized that every fisherman will receive one of these solar-powered outboard motors, ensuring a comprehensive transition. This move is part of the NPP’s “possibilities tour” in the Central region, aimed at sharing bold solutions with local communities.
Implementation Plan
– Meetings with fishermen will commence next week to educate them on the new technology.
– Pilot program to be launched before the end of the year.
– Distribution of solar-powered outboard motors to all fishermen.
This initiative follows previous efforts to address pre-mix fuel issues, including automation. However, Dr. Bawumia acknowledged that problems persisted, prompting the search for a permanent solution. With solar-powered outboard motors, Ghana’s fishing industry is poised for a significant transformation.
Interestingly, this isn’t the first time the government has supported fishermen with outboard motors. Previously, President Akufo-Addo presented over 6,000 outboard motors and fishing gear to fisherfolk. Additionally, 21 Ghanaian fishermen received outboard motors through a separate initiative.
