Edwin Zu-Cudjoe, Executive Director of Social Enterprise Ghana (SE Ghana), has appealed to the government to pass the long-awaited Social Enterprise Policy. This policy is crucial for creating jobs and social business opportunities for youth, reducing unemployment, and fostering a favorable environment for social enterprises.
At the recent Ghana Social Enterprise Policy Dialogue and Forum, organized by SE Ghana and supported by GIZ’s AgriBiz program, Zu-Cudjoe emphasized the importance of addressing critical issues facing social enterprises, particularly in agribusiness. The forum aimed to:
– Address environmental challenges, such as Galamsey
– Create a conducive environment for social enterprises
– Promote job creation for persons with disabilities and women
Zu-Cudjoe highlighted the potential of social enterprises to contribute to Ghana’s economy, citing the $502 billion social impact investing market. He stressed the need for increased government support and recognition to enable social entrepreneurs to scale up and attract patient capital from investors.
Professor Ernest Asamoah, Consultant for the Social Enterprise Policy drafting, revealed that the policy has been finalized, addressing key social and economic areas. The document is awaiting submission to the National Development Planning Commission (NDPC), ministerial, and cabinet memo for parliamentary approval within the next three months.
SE Ghana and stakeholders urge the government to prioritize the passage of the Social Enterprise Policy, unlocking opportunities for youth employment, social business growth, and sustainable development.
