Rocky Dawuni urges Ghanaian musicians to focus on craft over Grammy pursuit

Three-time Grammy nominee and reggae legend Rocky Dawuni has encouraged Ghanaian musicians to prioritize their art over chasing awards like the Grammys. In an interview on Hitz FM on September 12, 2024, Dawuni emphasized the importance of creating timeless music, highlighting that, legends such as Bob Marley and Fela Kuti never won Grammys, yet their influence endures.

“You’re making a timeless piece of art, and beyond all the accolades, it’s gonna be judged. Bob Marley and Fela Kuti never won Grammys. Where are the people who were nominated at that time? The music is bigger than any kind of award,” Dawuni remarked.

While acknowledging the value of awards, Dawuni called for a renewed focus on the local creative environment and the preservation of Highlife music, which he described as the foundation of Ghanaian music. He expressed concern over the lack of Highlife on local radio, despite its importance to Ghana’s cultural identity.

“Highlife music is the foundation of our music. People come to Ghana to experience Highlife, but when you turn on the radio, the playlist is totally different. Foreign! So who is doing who?” he questioned.

Dawuni urged young artists to embrace their heritage and integrate it into their music, noting that true creativity is a reflection of one’s identity. “Let’s inspire our young artistes to be innovative and appreciative of their culture. If you don’t use creativity to represent who you are, then who are you?” he concluded.
