The Electoral Commission (EC) has annulled the results of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Walewale parliamentary primary rerun due to the destruction of ballot papers. An unknown individual disrupted the sorting process, damaging most of the ballots, rendering it impossible to determine the winner.
According to Gabriel Manu, the Electoral Commissioner for Walewale, the incident occurred after voting and sorting were completed. A man, later arrested and identified as Kamara Bawah, destroyed the ballot papers, and some were salvaged but left badly damaged.
The EC was forced to halt the process, and the party will need to decide on the next steps. The Ghana Police Service has restored order in Walewale, heightened security measures, and is investigating the incident.
The suspect, Kamara Bawah, is in police custody, assisting with the investigation. The EC’s decision to nullify the results ensures the integrity of the electoral process and allows for a fair and transparent outcome.
